Ken Demers
has been teaching at Massasoit Community College since 1982. He
received a BA from Boston University with majors in mathematics and
physics, and an MS in Physics from Brown University. He has enjoyed
studying and working in a number of countries, which has helped form
his ideas on diversity and inclusion. He served for two years in
Ecuador as a Peace Corps volunteer at the Polytechnic University of the
Coast in Guayaquil. He spent a semester of additional study at Philips
University in Marburg, Germany. He also was a participant in a
Fulbright Program, which brought a group of faculty to China for six
weeks of study and travel after substantial cultural and language
training. He experiences linguistic diversity on a daily basis in his
bilingual (English-German) family. In addition to physics, Ken teaches
mathematics, astronomy, music history, and the Science of Music, which
he developed as a physics course for students interested in music. He
has served as President of the Academic Senate, as well as department
chair and chairperson of a number of governance and accreditation
committees. For several years he was a Faculty Coordinator for a Title
III grant activity, which had as a goal the improvement of teaching and
learning at Massasoit. This work included coordinating groups of
faculty in classroom research, outcomes-based learning, and
cross-curriculum competency projects. In his spare time, Ken plays the
piano, listens to music, tries to get some exercise, and reads.
