Linda
Cohen (lcohen@massasoit.mass.edu) has been teaching as an adjunct
English instructor at both Massasoit and Bridgewater State College
since 1998. She has a family background that includes immigrant
and WASP roots, various kinds of abuse, and experience with racial
conflict, including “when neighbors called and threatened [them] not to
sell [their] house in Sharon to a Negro family.” She loves
teaching in environments that allow her to use all her varied
experiences, including living in a suburban town that took part in the
METCO program that bused about 20 inner city African-American students
to her school. She had difficulty learning in school. Her grades
were not very good and her parents made it clear that, as much as she
wanted to go, it was obvious she was not college material. Years
later, she proved them wrong when she graduated from Massasoit
Community College with honors and went on to earn bachelor’s and
master’s degrees. Her hobbies--like riding her motorcycle with
WOW, a women’s motorcycle group, as far as Alabama; belonging to and
competing in the International Blade Fighters’ Guild; camping; SCUBA
diving; and firewalking--all add to the diverse fabric of her
relationships with students, colleagues, and life.
